“Newborn Abandoned at Hospital, Sparks Adoption Interest”

-

A newborn infant was discovered abandoned on a bed in the children’s ward at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital yesterday evening, accompanied by a handwritten note found inside a bag. The hospital sources reported that the baby was brought to the ward at approximately 6:00 pm the previous day.

During the incident, Intern doctor Golam Ahad, who was on duty at the time, shared with The Daily Star in a phone conversation today that a couple, both aged around 50, presented themselves as the infant’s maternal grandparents and requested the infant’s admission to the hospital. However, when questioned about the baby’s mother, they mentioned she was downstairs. They were asked to bring her up but never returned. Subsequently, the baby was noticed alone on a bed outside the children’s ward by others who then informed the hospital staff.

Despite thorough efforts, neither the baby’s mother nor any relatives were located. A shopping bag was left beside the bed containing medications, diapers, baby clothing, and a note believed to be from the mother. The note detailed the mother’s Muslim identity, expressed helplessness, and cited compelling circumstances for leaving the baby at the hospital. It included the baby’s date of birth as November 4, 2025, which fell on a Tuesday, and highlighted that the enclosed items were the baby’s medications.

Dr. Ahad mentioned that although the baby was born prematurely, the infant’s current condition was stable. The baby was undergoing phototherapy treatment and being kept warm, with other mothers in the ward providing care.

Following the dissemination of this news, numerous individuals have approached the hospital expressing interest in adopting the baby. The hospital administration stated that a decision regarding the baby’s future would be made after consultations with relevant departments.
