“Lalbagh Fort Comes Alive with Allauddin Khan Tribute Concert”

-

The historic walls of Lalbagh Fort resonated with the enchanting melodies of Hindustani classical music as the nation celebrated the 163rd birth anniversary of Ustad Allauddin Khan, a revered maestro known for elevating South Asian classical music to global recognition.

Organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and overseen by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the event transformed the ancient Mughal fort into a fusion of heritage and musical harmony. Illuminated arches and intricate stonework provided a picturesque backdrop for a unique encounter between music and historical remembrance, where the enduring legacy of Allauddin Khan found new meaning within Dhaka’s iconic monument.

Guests entering the fortress gates were greeted by an atmosphere of grandeur. Soft golden lights highlighted the ancient walls, creating an ambiance filled with anticipation and respect, as if the echoes of the past had come to life.

In a recorded message, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the evening, hailing Allauddin Khan as a legendary figure who introduced South Asian classical music to the world stage. The setting was described as a fitting tribute where history itself seemed to be listening.

Attending the event were Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan. Farooki, addressing the audience, emphasized that Allauddin Khan’s influence transcended music to become a philosophy and a vision that continues to inspire generations.

During the gathering, both Khan and Hasan drew attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine. Their words resonated with the audience, who joined in chanting “Free, free Palestine!” in a moment of shared empathy amidst the artistic and cultural ambiance.

The evening commenced with a documentary showcasing Allauddin Khan’s life of dedication and discipline, portraying him as a man who viewed music as a form of spiritual practice. This was followed by Pandit Asit Dey’s emotive performance of Raga Bhimpalasi, evoking the grace of the master through voice and instrument.

The night’s main performance featured Raga Kirwani, led by teachers and students of Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay. Vocalist Abhijit Kundu, accompanied by tabla players Prashanta Bhowmik and Fahmida Nazneen, esraj artist Shukla Halder, sarangi player Niloy Halder, and young sarod players Isra and Ilham Fuljhuri Khan—all descendants of the Allauddin Khan lineage. The performance was conducted by Maitree Sarkar.

The highlight of the evening was Ustad Allauddin Khan’s great-grandson, Siraj Ali Khan, who presented a highly anticipated performance. Holding up his great-grandfather’s century-and-a-half-old sarod, he commenced his set accompanied by tabla players Kallol Ghosh and Archik Banerjee, conjuring the spirit of Maihar’s renowned gurukul, founded by the maestro himself.

The audience, consisting of diplomats, artists, and cultural figures, listened attentively. Noteworthy attendees included the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Mofidur Rahman, Shilpakala Academy Director General Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, and National Museum DG Tanzim Ibn Wahab, alongside representatives from various embassies and UNESCO.

The evening was elegantly hosted by renowned actor and director Afzal Hossain and television presenter Maria Fariha Upoma, who guided the audience through the performances with charm and humor.
