“Reviving Cricket Culture in Chattogram: BCB Steps In”

-

Chattogram, a city known for hosting international cricket matches and currently staging the Bangladesh-West Indies T20I series, has been a key hub for cricket in the country. Despite its history of regional competitions, the local fans have been missing out on these events, which were once a significant part of the city’s cricket culture.

In the past, Chattogram stood out for its vibrant cricket scene, producing renowned players like Akram Khan, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, and Tamim Iqbal. The city regularly organized premier leagues and lower-tier tournaments without fail, creating a lasting legacy in the cricketing landscape.

However, this tradition has been disrupted in recent times. Since the change in government leadership, cricket activities in Chattogram have stagnated. The premier league and second-division competitions were halted abruptly, leaving players and fans in limbo. Despite a brief regional T20 competition held earlier this year, the void left by the absence of regular leagues remains palpable.

The strained relationship between the former deputy commissioner and club officials has been cited as a primary reason for the halt in cricket activities. The disbandment of the District Sports Association and the lack of action from the current ad-hoc committee have exacerbated the crisis, leaving players in financial distress.

Efforts are now being made to revive cricket in Chattogram, with the support of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul is set to visit the city to discuss potential solutions with local authorities. Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury, a BCB director from Chattogram, is optimistic about the prospects of restarting district cricket and the premier league, emphasizing the need for infrastructure development and training programs.

The goal is to expand cricket beyond Chattogram, addressing the lack of facilities in other districts of the division. While challenges persist, there is renewed hope for the resurgence of cricket in Chattogram, a city with a rich cricketing heritage.
