“Bangladesh Mourns Education Pioneer Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed”

-

On July 31, 2025, Bangladesh mourned the loss of a remarkable figure, Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed, a prominent figure in the country’s education, business, diplomatic, and civil society sectors. Mrs. Murshed, known for founding Scholastica school, also established the Ascent Group, served as the high commissioner to Pakistan, and played key roles advising Bangladesh’s interim government and chairing the Asia Pacific Women in Politics Resource Network.

For many students at Scholastica, Mrs. Murshed was a distant presence due to her government appointments that took her away from direct involvement with the school. Despite this, her legacy loomed large within the institution she founded. Starting from humble beginnings in 1977 with a vision to provide quality English-medium education in post-independence Bangladesh, Scholastica grew into a leading educational institution with multiple branches across Dhaka.

Mrs. Murshed’s approach to education at Scholastica was progressive, emphasizing gender equality, extracurricular activities, and a holistic learning experience. The institution broke traditional norms by promoting equal opportunities for girls in sports and leadership roles. Furthermore, Mrs. Murshed integrated religious education into the curriculum, blending faith with critical thinking.

Beyond academics, Mrs. Murshed’s influence extended to creating Etcetera, a pioneering departmental store in Dhaka that offered a unique cultural and recreational experience for students and the community. While Scholastica catered to a specific demographic, it provided a nurturing environment that instilled valuable lessons and values in its students.

Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed’s impact on Bangladesh’s educational and cultural landscape is profound and enduring. Her vision and legacy continue to shape the lives of countless individuals who have been touched by the institution she built. May she rest in peace, leaving behind a lasting legacy of transformation and progress.
