“Nirjharini: Gems of Nazrul Celebrates 9th Anniversary”

-

The 9th anniversary of Gems of Nazrul was commemorated with a musical event named “Nirjharini” at The Daily Star Center in Dhaka on October 11. The program, known as “Adi Shur Mancha,” kicked off with a splendid group rendition of the Nazrul Sangeet “Ghumonto Bonobhumi Rum Jhum K Bajay.”

During the event, distinguished Nazrul scholar Professor Dr Nashid Kamal and acclaimed violinist Sunil Chandra Das were felicitated for their remarkable contributions to Nazrul Sangeet. Flowers were presented to them by Dalia Nausheen. Dr Nashid Kamal, hailing from a renowned lineage, is not only a talented performer but also a committed researcher. She has translated seven books encompassing Nazrul’s songs, poems, and editorials.

Dr Nashid Kamal underscored Nazrul’s stress on organization, quoting, “We require organization. Bengali Muslims need organization. We lack the ability to follow a leader. Leadership should be instilled gradually from childhood. Gems of Nazrul is embodying this principle. I have faith in Sadya Afreen Mallick’s efforts, and I believe Gems of Nazrul will reach its centenary.”

Sunil Chandra Das also expressed his gratitude, remarking, “Events of this caliber are rare. Sadya Afreen Mallick orchestrates them splendidly with musicians and artists. I am thankful for this recognition and extend my thanks to all involved.”

Following the awards ceremony, there were live performances by veteran artists including Dr Asit Roy, Nasima Shaheen Fancy, Shaheed Kabir Polash, Dalia Nausheen, and others. Dr Asit Roy delivered a heartfelt rendition of the Nazrul song “Sati Har Udashi Bhairab Kadee.” Subsequently, Shaheed Kabir Polash, alongside students from the Kazi Nazrul Institute, presented “Tomar Bina Tarer Geeti” and performed the solo “Jagoo Arun Bhairaba.” The performance of the song “Esho Sharod Pratero Pothi” by Dalia Nausheen, Nasima Shaheen Fancy, and Nahid Momen mesmerized the audience.

Reflecting on the journey of Gems of Nazrul, founder Sadya Afreen Mallick recollected, “I chanced upon a neglected statue of Nazrul one day, covered in dust. As a Nazrul Sangeet vocalist, I felt compelled to protest. I contacted Mayor Anisul Hoque, and numerous artists joined us in a collective musical performance. Subsequently, I realized the need for a platform dedicated to this art form. Our initial performance at East West University laid the foundation for the growth of Gems of Nazrul.”

Over the years, Gems of Nazrul has shared 37 songs on YouTube and annually recognizes researchers, musicians, and artists. This year, two outstanding individuals—a researcher and a musician—were lauded for their exceptional contributions to Nazrul Sangeet.

The evening splendidly honored the timeless creations of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, uniting musicians, enthusiasts, and scholars to pay tribute to his artistic genius and enduring impact on Bengali music and culture.
