US President Donald Trump demanded the imprisonment of Chicago’s mayor and the governor of Illinois, who are both members of the Democratic Party, as his administration geared up to send military forces to patrol the streets of the third-largest city in the US. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, despite not facing any criminal allegations, have been vocal critics of Trump’s strict immigration policies and the deployment of National Guard troops in cities that typically vote Democratic. Trump took to his social media platform to accuse Johnson and Pritzker of neglecting to safeguard immigration officers working in Chicago. In a tweet, Trump stated, “Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also!” The Mayor recently issued an executive order establishing an “ICE Free Zone” to prevent federal immigration agents from using city-owned properties for their activities. Both Johnson and Pritzker were not available for immediate comment. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that a majority of Americans disapprove of deploying troops when there is no external threat.
