Paramount Global has made a significant decision to discontinue the global broadcast of all music-centered channels under MTV, including MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV Music, Club MTV, and MTV Live, by the end of December 31, 2025. This move signifies the conclusion of over forty years of uninterrupted music-focused programming and highlights the network’s transition from being a pioneer in music television to a platform primarily focused on reality entertainment.
While the flagship MTV HD channel will continue to broadcast, its content will shift exclusively to reality shows, departing significantly from its initial identity as a platform for music videos and artist exploration. MTV, established in 1981 in the United States, played a monumental role in reshaping popular culture by revolutionizing music consumption through music videos and introducing iconic Video Jockeys (VJs). The network’s milestones include debuting Michael Jackson’s Thriller, airing Live Aid in 1985, and creating the MTV Video Music Awards, leaving a lasting impact on a generation’s musical taste and fashion sense.
Former MTV VJ Simone Angel shared her sentiments with the BBC, expressing sadness and disbelief over the network’s transformation and emphasizing the importance of supporting artists and enjoying music together. MTV’s global expansion began in 1987 with the introduction of its European edition, followed by the launch of a UK-specific channel in 1997.
The announcement has triggered a wave of nostalgia and criticism on social media platforms, with users expressing sentiments like “MTV is discontinuing most of its music channels in the UK. Remember when MTV used to air music videos? Reality TV has overshadowed the music scene.” The decision has evoked mixed reactions, reflecting the changing landscape of music and entertainment consumption.
