“Ducsu Election Sets Peaceful Precedent in Bangladesh”

-

The recently concluded Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election was notable for its peaceful conduct, with no instances of political violence post-announcement of results, a surprising outcome for many observers. This achievement is commendable and reflects positively on the university authorities, interim government, students, and political parties involved. However, concerns linger regarding the sustainability of this peaceful environment in future national elections or other university union polls.

Overall, voter turnout was high, although female student participation lagged behind male students by approximately 15%. Without targeted efforts to address this gap, a similar trend may be witnessed in upcoming national elections.

Issues in election management, such as inadequate ballot mark darkness affecting scanner detection and challenges in the technology-based counting system, have been highlighted. While the intention to modernize the counting process is laudable, the failure to address these issues beforehand raises questions about the preparedness of the country’s top university authorities. Instances of ballot distribution irregularities and allegations of pre-marked ballots distribution are unacceptable, underscoring the need for better training of polling center staff. Furthermore, the irresponsible behavior of a returning officer in accusing a candidate without proper justification is concerning.

The successful candidates in the election have set a new standard, emphasizing the importance of embracing free thought, respecting diverse opinions, and fostering dissent within the university community to uphold democratic values. The experience gained from Ducsu’s election is valuable in promoting tolerance towards criticism and avoiding unnecessary provocations, exemplified by the dignified response to rumors of government interference in election results.

Analysis of the election results suggests a rejection of binary pro- and anti-independence politics by students. Despite media reports linking winners to Islami Chhatrashibir, their decision to contest under the banner of Oikyaboddho Shikkharthi Jote, inclusive of candidates not affiliated with Shibir, raises questions about their strategic choice of identity in a post-dictatorship era. The avoidance of their true identity may be attributed to the negative perception associated with Shibir and Jamaat-e-Islami’s stance on the Liberation War.

The transformation of Shibir’s image through disguises as “general students” and strategic reorganization within student bodies has been noted. In contrast, Chatradal’s historical challenges and sacrifices have shaped its political narrative. The resurgence of Shibir in the open political arena post-dictatorship reflects shifting dynamics within student politics.

The election served as a significant test for the interim government, offering insights into the feasibility of conducting future national elections. For BNP, their engagement in the Ducsu election was a strategic move to assess their capabilities and strategize for upcoming electoral challenges. The defeat in the Ducsu polls provides an opportunity for introspection and reevaluation of their political approach.

In conclusion, the Ducsu election outcome underscores the importance of peaceful conduct, inclusivity, and transparency in electoral processes, setting a positive precedent for future democratic exercises in Bangladesh.
