Habiganj Hospital Plagued by Brokers and Thieves

-

Broker syndicates and theft gangs have been a persistent issue at Habiganj’s 250-bed District Sadar Hospital, causing anxiety and distress among patients and their families. Service seekers have reported that brokers, in cahoots with certain hospital employees, frequently hassle visitors, enticing them to private clinics while demanding additional payments. Meanwhile, thieves exploit the chaotic environment to pilfer wallets, phones, and other valuables from unsuspecting victims.

One recent victim, Abdul Kuddus from Baniachong, recounted bringing his wife to the hospital for treatment, only to discover his wallet missing shortly after arrival. The wallet contained cash, identification cards, and important documents, leaving him in a dire situation. Similarly, Sumona Akter from Chunarughat shared her experience of having her mobile phone stolen while waiting in line for a doctor’s appointment, noting that a man offering assistance with her paperwork distracted her before the theft occurred.

Local shop owner Subhan Mia highlighted that these syndicates operate brazenly within and around the hospital premises. They coerce patients into paying bribes for expedited treatment, redirect impoverished individuals to expensive private facilities, and collaborate with nearby pharmacies and diagnostic centers for substantial kickbacks.

Hospital authorities disclosed that in 2018, a sub-committee was established by the management to eradicate these brokers. By February 2019, a list of 28 identified brokers, hailing from Habiganj town, Baniachong, and Chunarughat, was made public. Despite these efforts, the problem continues unabated.

Shah Alam, company commander of Rab-9 (CPC-3), mentioned that following numerous complaints, a raid was conducted on October 29, resulting in the detention of nine brokers. Executive Magistrate Md Mohsin Miah affirmed their commitment to ongoing operations against these illicit practices.

Dr. Aminul Haque Sarkar, the hospital superintendent, acknowledged the persistence of the issue, emphasizing the need for a collective approach to eliminate the problem completely. He assured that any specific complaints against doctors or staff members would be met with appropriate legal action.
