“Sara Hossain Revives Family Leather Business with Ethical Vision”

-

After spending close to twenty years in Canada, Sara Hossain returned to Bangladesh in 2021 not to reinvent herself but to take on the responsibility of overseeing her father’s leather footwear and accessories business. Craftsman Footwear & Accessories Ltd., established by her father to tap into Bangladesh’s thriving yet under-the-radar leather export industry, faced challenges as the pandemic struck just as operations were gearing up.

With a background in Environmental Science and healthcare, Hossain decided to step in and nurture the business her father had initiated. Despite the majority of the company’s products being exported, Hossain has been working on creating a separate brand for the local market, aiming to raise awareness about the quality and value of products made in Bangladesh.

Beyond just producing footwear, Hossain’s vision includes reshaping consumer perceptions. She strives to instill dignity and comfort in the workplace, creating an environment where employees feel valued and respected. The factory also focuses on sustainability practices, repurposing leftover materials and transitioning to eco-friendly packaging options.

Hossain is dedicated to educating consumers on leather care and product longevity, emphasizing the importance of understanding the supply chain. While she envisions future expansion into international markets, her current priority is building trust with local customers and upholding the legacy of her father’s factory.

Focused on steady growth and ethical business practices, Hossain aims to set a positive example for the leather industry in Bangladesh. Her commitment to values and sustainability may serve as a model for others in the sector, leaving a lasting impact on the community and industry as a whole.
