Shafiqur Rahman has secured his position as the leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for the term spanning 2026–2028, following his re-election. This victory marks his third consecutive term at the helm of the party. The election results were announced by Jamaat’s Chief Election Commissioner and Assistant Secretary General, Maulana ATM Masum, in a press release issued by the party on Saturday night.
The voting process, conducted through secret ballot, took place from October 9 to October 25, with party members known as rukon from all over the country participating. Subsequently, the ballots were counted by the respective committees, revealing Shafiqur as the candidate with the highest number of votes. This term will be his third stint as the ameer, having previously served for the periods of 2020–2022 and 2023–2025.
As per the party’s regulations, the members of the Central Majlish-e-Shura initially elect a three-member ameer panel through a secret ballot. Following this, rukon nationwide then vote via secret ballot to select one of the panel members as the ameer. Ehsanul Mahbub Jubayer, the assistant secretary general of Jamaat and head of the central publicity department, shared with The Daily Star that since the party’s resurgence in independent Bangladesh in 1979, Ghulam Azam held the ameer position until 2000. Abbas Ali Khan succeeded him, serving as ameer for over a decade. The leadership baton was then passed to Motiur Rahman Nizami from 2000 to 2016, and subsequently to Mokbul Ahmad from 2016 to 2019.
