Radio Free Asia, established nearly thirty years ago to cover news in China and other Asian nations where independent media is limited, announced on Wednesday that it will cease operations following the termination of funding from the US government. The media outlet had previously let go or placed on leave over 90% of its workforce and significantly reduced its content output after the majority of funding from US government-backed media was cut by President Donald Trump’s administration in March. Known for being a source of contention for Beijing, the shutdown of Radio Free Asia coincides with President Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Asia, as he aims to improve diplomatic relations.
