A premature infant in Ontario has passed away after contracting measles from the mother, prompting discussions on how the virus spreads during pregnancy. The Ontario health authorities confirmed the death of the baby, who got infected with measles while in the womb. This fatality marks the first in the provincial outbreak that began on October 28 last year and has seen 2,009 probable and confirmed cases.
Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, mentioned that while measles might have played a role in the premature birth and subsequent death, the infant also battled other severe medical issues unrelated to the virus. Measles, a respiratory infection characterized by symptoms like fever, rash, cough, and red, watery eyes, can lead to serious implications, including death.
The current measles outbreak in southwestern Ontario, primarily affecting Mennonite and Amish communities with lower vaccination rates, was linked back to a Mennonite wedding in New Brunswick. Health officials emphasize the vulnerability of unvaccinated individuals to measles and urge everyone, especially those planning pregnancy, to ensure they receive the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccines for protection.
Dr. Jacqueline Wong, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, stated that the transmission of measles during pregnancy is uncommon. The impact on the baby varies based on the pregnancy stage, with risks increasing due to fetal development, placental growth, and blood circulation. Pregnant individuals infected with measles face heightened risks, including a higher rate of lung infections like pneumonia and potential complications like miscarriage and premature birth.
While babies born to measles-infected individuals may experience issues such as low birth weight and respiratory problems, they can also suffer from rare complications like subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which is often fatal and can manifest years after the initial infection. Health officials stress the importance of immunization to prevent measles and its associated risks, as the MMR vaccine has a long history of safety and effectiveness.
It is crucial for individuals planning pregnancy to be up to date with their immunizations, as the measles vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy due to the live strain it contains. Health authorities advise pregnant individuals exposed to measles to seek medical advice promptly, with the option of an injectable medication called IVIg available for protection or symptom management.
