Nutritionist’s ‘proper’ way to store carrots – you’ve been doing it wrong

-

Carrots, a staple on any grocery list, can be a real disappointment when they go off too soon, turning mouldy or slimy.

But it turns out we might have been storing them all wrong, leading to their premature spoilage. Nutritionist coach and cook Amanda Rocchio has taken to social media to enlighten us on the “proper way” to keep our carrots fresh.

In her TikTok video, Amanda reveals: “You’ve probably been storing your carrots the wrong way, let me show you the right thing to do.” She points out that many of us simply chuck whole or baby carrots into the fridge drawer without a second thought.

However, Amanda advises that the best method is to remove the carrots from their packaging, submerge them in water within a container, and then place them in the middle of the fridge. Amanda explains: “The key is to place them in a container and fill it up with water. They can last four weeks this way.”

To avoid spoilage from the fridge’s moisture, she suggests keeping the carrots in a lidded container filled with water, reports the Express.

It’s also crucial to refresh the water every five to six days to keep the carrots at peak freshness. This technique not only preserves the carrots but also extends their shelf life by weeks, potentially saving you money on your food bills.

Carrots can enjoy an extended shelf life when kept in a container filled with water, as they thrive in consistent humidity and temperature environments, according to food storage advice. The temperature variations experienced by carrots stored in a fridge drawer – which is opened frequently – can negatively impact their quality and longevity.

Being highly sensitive to humidity fluctuations, carrots may not fare well in the fridge’s vegetable drawer, designed for higher humidity than other parts of the appliance; too much moisture can lead to mould, while not enough causes dehydration and spoilage. Amanda’s social media advice triggered a revelation among her followers about improper carrot storage.

One user confessed: “I have learned that I don’t know how to adult. I haven’t stored anything correctly so far! ” Another person shared their positive experience: “This is very true. I started doing this and it was amazing how long the carrots lasted.”

A third also verified the tip’s effectiveness, adding, “This is a great idea and it works. I also found out it works great with celery as well!”
