‘My mother-in-law made my pregnancy all about her – she even has odd name demand’

-

Your pregnancy should be all about you and your baby.

Whether you’ve got children or not, we can all appreciate that being a first-time parent is tough. Going through pregnancy, giving birth, and then raising your baby definitely isn’t a walk in the park, and most of us wouldn’t hesitate to step up and help a loved one who was expecting or had just recently given birth.

It’s also not hard to understand the pressures and stresses that mums-to-be face when they’re pregnant, even if you’ve never experienced it yourself. But one expectant mother is at her wit’s end with her mother-in-law, as she seems to have no regard for her feelings and is more interested in her own excitement about becoming a grandmother.

In a post on Reddit, the mum-to-be said that she’s not the biggest fan of her mother-in-law, but she’s been able to “get along with her pretty well” overall. However, when she announced her pregnancy, her husband’s mother immediately made the news “all about her” becoming a grandmother, and it’s starting to annoy both the woman and her husband.

She said: “She hasn’t congratulated us once. The first thing she said when we told her was ‘It’s finally my turn! My first grandbaby! I’m the last one out of all my friends and family to have a grandchild!’ Me and my husband are literally also the last ones out of our friend groups to have kids, but I digress.

“We were both pretty annoyed with how much she made our special moment about her, but I think it bothers me more than him that she continues to make everything about her. I’m not sure if she realises that I’m the one who is pregnant, not her.”

But things have gotten much worse than just stealing the spotlight from the happy couple, as the grandma-to-be has now made an outlandish request – she wants the baby to be named after her.

The woman said she and her husband don’t yet know the sex of their baby, but her mother-in-law has insisted that if they have a girl, they should name it after her. What’s more, she demanded that if they do have a boy instead, they should name him after her husband, the baby’s grandfather. When the woman refused, her mother-in-law was “offended”.

She added: “She seemed almost offended that we didn’t want to name our child after her or my father-in-law. She then proceeded to try to convince me to name our child after her and told me that she almost named my sister-in-law after herself but decided upon a different name and was hoping I would reconsider. No, ma’am, I will not.

“I’m just baffled. Maybe it’s not a big deal, but on top of her making everything about her in my pregnancy so far, it really rubbed me the wrong way.”

Commenters on the post were firmly on the mum-to-be’s side, with many saying she can name her child whatever she wants. They also said if her mother-in-law wants to make key decisions over a baby’s life, she should have another child of her own instead of dictating choices for her son’s family.

One person said: “It is a big deal because it shows her attitude and entitlement. Be aware and be prepared. Something tells me that it will become hell once the baby is here.” Another added: “This is obviously a little nuts … but I would be pretty concerned for what’s to come with this woman after the baby is born.”
