Meghan Markle’s shock new Instagram video speaks volumes about her relationship with Prince Harry, according to an expert.
The Duchess of Sussex launched her first Instagram account since 2020 on the first day of 2025, with a post showing her running on a beach. Under the username @meghan, Harry’s wife shared a video of herself at the beach, wearing white and drawing 2025 in the sand.
The video was filmed by Harry himself and comes at a time when the couple appear to be heading in different directions when it comes to their work. In the past few months, they have been making a string of solo appearances and have not been seen together in public since their tour of Colombia in August.
However, according to body language expert Judi James, the video does drop a major clue about their relationship. She told the Mirror: “Well, it looks like a very confident but playful Meghan is re-opening that Pandora’s box that is social media here, posting an enigmatic little video that is more celebrity in mood than royal.
“The body language appears pinned on the person holding the camera here, as doing smiling zoomies down a beach would normally imply a desire to be chased. There’s even the ‘clue’ of those huge footprints in the wet sand to match up with Harry’s feet, so the undercurrent story seems to be that the romance is still alive in the Montecito household.”
Harry and Meghan stopped using their original Sussex Royal account in 2020 when they quit as senior royals. The couple’s account was launched on April 2 2019 after they split from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Kensington Palace household, which operates on social media as Kensington Royal.
Harry and Meghan used their account to announce the birth and name of their baby son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, to promote their own work and that of charities, and release their so-called Megxit statement.
And Judi added: “The gap in her personal social media use seems to have been about privacy but here she looks happy but a little coy about opening up those doors again for some direct, peek-a-boo communication with the public in a very celebrity-based way.
“Her dilemma might have been that a lack of direct communication can lead to speculation and rumour, while some direct chats will allow her to control the narrative again. Catherine’s stunning video with William and their children might have been the toe-dip in the water that proved it is possible to be royal and to share or reveal your emotions in a way you might not be able to do in public life.”
Meghan’s disappearance in 2020 was not the first time the duchess had gone offline. She also closed her social media accounts ahead of her wedding to Harry in 2018. The former actress, who had a popular Instagram account when she was best known for her role in Suits, had indicated she would return to social media.
In a 2022 interview with New York Magazine’s The Cut, she confided: “Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back … on Instagram.” At other times, she sounded reluctant to return, citing concerns about harassment. In 2023, she and Harry urged social media platforms to strengthen content-moderation policies, saying that some apps could damage the mental health of young people.
