A travel fan has shared what he thinks of people bringing one particular food onto planes.
Zavier Torrence, a TV and film content creator based in Tampa, Florida, is strongly against people eating a tuna melt sandwich mid-air. He posted a five-second video on TikTok of himself sitting inside the cabin, holding his nose because of the smell of another passenger’s fishy sandwich.
In the post he wrote: “Strongly believe people who eat on flights need to be incarcerated for 10 days,” adding: “Because why are we eating a TUNA MELT on a flight?!?”. It seems as though this particular item of food on a plane is a big no-no for Zavier, even on a long flight.
His video quickly went viral, racking up 1.3million views, 41,000 likes and 978 comments. It sparked a debate about whether or not passengers should eat tuna on a plane.
One person agreed with Zavier, writing: “I feel like packing food is fine but unleashing a TUNA MELT in a small confined space is crazy.” Another admitted they are “guilty of this” and said: “Sorry I just love tuna and it’s the easiest sandwich to transport and all meats smell and I’m pescatarian.”
A third added: “I agree with you that a tuna melt is straight up evil on a flight, but you leave me and my bag of zebra cakes ALONE.” Even someone who works on planes confessed: “I’m a flight attendant and I’m bringing my tuna sub from Subway.”
Some people disagreed with tuna having a strong scent, saying: “Tuna don’t even smell that strong to me”, while someone else agreed: “A tuna sandwich is so normal,” and another chimed in: “Tuna doesn’t even smell bad.” Most commenters thought eating in general is acceptable on a plane, especially if it is a long flight.
One TikTok user questioned: “I have a 10 hour flight coming up…you expect people not to eat during a flight???” Another added: “I’m flying to Europe soon, yes I’m eating on that long flight.”
A luxury traveller admitted: “I’m always gonna eat my meal they give me in first class. Sorry.” Other passengers left comments on Zavier’s TikTok video to share the experiences they’ve had with people eating food on a plane.
One person said: “See i wouldn’t usually mind but a lady next to me had a baked potato??” A second user added: “Once on a flight from Boston to LA the man next to me whipped out an gallon sized ziplock bag of peeled hard boiled eggs…I was a senior in hs (high school) and wrote an essay about it for AP psych upon returning.”
Experts at Netflights have investigated the popular debates when it comes to long-haul flights, and have shared what not to do on flights. Their suggestions of things to do to master plane etiquette include never taking smelly foods on a plane such as eggs, tuna, Monster Munch crisps and even broccoli is one of the worst, according to flight attendants.
Experts also suggest it is an unwritten rule that passengers shouldn’t clap when the plane lands because it can be disruptive to other passengers onboard and can inconvenience flight attendants who need to provide information to passengers or speak with the pilot. Something important experts have advised plane passengers not to do is fasten their seatbelts around their ankles, a viral TikTok trend, as this is “extremely dangerous and can cause deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot issue associated with flying.”
