‘I’m a baby name enthusiast – these monikers look completely made up’

-

It can be tough to find a unique baby name for your little one – something that you’ve not heard many times before but something that still resonates with you and isn’t utterly ridiculous.

There has been a rise in recent years of more quirky monikers, but some parents have pushed back against them, mercilessly mocking names that are a little too out of the ordinary.

However, one “baby name enthusiast,” @jaynevetter, has shared baby names that she “despises,” and some of them are not even that unusual. Some told her to “leave hater behaviour in 2024” because they were shocked she’d mock the name of a child – but she was unrepentant.

Jayne started the video by saying: “As always, remember that my opinions are my own. If you named any of your children these names, it’s okay. They’re fine. As long as you like the name, that’s what matters. And if any of these are your name, just remember, you didn’t get to choose your name…”

She said that she was going to start off with boy names, and the first one she said she hated was ‘Eddie’. “It just rings an awful ring in my ears,” she admitted. Jayne also shared that ‘Edgar, Edwin, Edward’ she “can’t do it” with those names either.

“Along those lines are Will, or Willy,” she said, but she admitted that she doesn’t mind ‘William,’ saying it’s “not offensive”.

“Sorry, but I cannot do it when boys are named Ocean, or River – any body of water. Same goes for Lakelynn for a girl, I can’t do it,” she announced. Others on the chopping block for her were ‘Reign, Rayne, Rain,’ or “names that you would name your dog,” as she said “don’t do it”.

“Which will bring me to my hottest take of all, and that’s Cooper for a boy. Listen, it’s such a cute name, it’s the cutest dog name ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. If you have a dog named Cooper, love. I just don’t know if we need to be naming a little boy Cooper,” Jayne mused.

Then she said, “Now for girls,” admitting she was “scared” of the potential backlash she’d receive about slating these names.

She started off with ‘Lydia,’ saying she doesn’t “like the way it flows or the way it sounds”. Jayne then said that brought her to the name ‘Ryleigh,’ and “any names that end in ‘leigh’.”

“Any names that have excess A’s” also get a thumbs-down from Jayne, as she listed off ‘Ariella, Ayla, Alaia’, and she fumed: “Some of them just look made up.”

“Okay, last name, and then I’m gonna go hide, is Nevaeh. I simply would rather name my daughter Heaven than Nevaeh. I’m sorry,” she concluded, as she asked people not to “come for” her over her opinions.
