E-CAB Gears Up for Crucial Election on 26 July

-

Dhaka, 21 July 2025— The election for the Executive Committee of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) for the 2025–2027 term will be held on 26 July, as confirmed by the Ministry of Commerce. A total of 11 positions will be filled through direct voting to elect the organisation’s new leadership.

The election schedule has been formally announced by Muhammad Saeed Ali, Administrator of e-CAB and Deputy Secretary of the Central Digital Cell at the Ministry of Commerce. Speaking to the media, he said, “We are expecting a festive and transparent election. All necessary preparations have been completed.”

Despite the preparations, concerns remain regarding persistent efforts to delay or derail the election process. Multiple sources indicate that certain defeated quarters, along with supporters of the recently ousted Awami League government and candidates apprehensive of a possible loss, are actively attempting to obstruct the upcoming vote.

Previously, the election scheduled for 31 May was suspended by the e-CAB Election Board on 14 May, a decision that drew strong criticism from both members and candidates.

Following the announcement of the new date, members expressed optimism that elected representatives would be better positioned to advocate for the sector. One member stated, “We want the election to proceed without further delay. Our business has slowed significantly. Without elected leadership, we cannot raise our demands with the government.”

This year, 36 candidates are contesting the election, with 22 of them running under two major panels — Team United and Team Tiger.

Team Tiger is led by Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Group CEO of the Daffodil Family and Chairman of Green Data Ltd. He commented, “Since the suspension, I have refrained from campaigning. I am now simply waiting for 26 July.”

On the other hand, Team United candidate Ms. Jannatul Haque stated, “We have finalised our election manifesto, which offers pragmatic solutions to the current needs and challenges of e-CAB members. We have prioritised resolving VAT complexities and unresolved legacy issues.”

She added, “We believe the 26 July election will usher in a new era for e-CAB, and we are fully prepared to lead the organisation towards becoming a more responsive, effective, and future-ready institution.”

The Election Board will be chaired by Tarafdar Sohel Rahman, with Shahadat Hossain and Md. Rezaul Karim serving as members — all of whom are Deputy Secretaries at the Ministry of Commerce.

A total of 835 voters will participate in this year’s election. Of them, 502 were on the previous list, with an additional 333 new voters recently added.

Stakeholders across the sector are hopeful that this election — backed by broad participation and institutional support — will deliver a capable and representative leadership for the future of Bangladesh’s e-commerce industry.
