Coronation Street star Sam Aston reveals future on soap after staff crisis

-

Longstanding Coronation Street cast member Sam Aston has broken his silence on the mass exits from the show.

The actor, 31, has revealed his thoughts on his future on the show after a number of lengthy servants exited the ITV soap. Sam, who has played the role of Chesney Brown since 2003 when he was a child, has opened up after the likes of Helen Worth and Sue Cleaver left the show.

While he is currently taking on a new challenge in Dancing On Ice, Sam admits he has no concrete plans to permanently step away from his role on the Weatherfield cobbles – but didn’t completely rule out an exit.

Speaking The Mirror and other press, he said of his schedule: “I’m not like written out for this or anything like that. I’ve got a bit of work in the pipeline coming up, so it’ll just depend on how far I go and how busy I can potentially get.”

He added that big exits are part and parcel of the Coronation Street life. Describing Helen as an icon, he wished her well on her time away from the street. “’50 years, she was an absolute legend. Hats off to her – enjoy your retirement, you deserve it.”

Sam’s Dancing On Ice adventure alongside professional skater Molly Lanaghan got underway on Sunday. The duo performed to The Ting Tings’ song That’s Not My Name and were awarded a total score of 27 points. They received scores of 6.5 by Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse, while Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean awarded them a 7 each.

However, the scoring his criticised by viewers, who believed the judges were being far too lenient.

Sam became the latest in a long line of Corrie stars to take to the ice. Others include the likes of Ryan Thomas – who played Jason Grimshaw – and Claire Sweeney, who stars as Cassie Plummer. Mollie Gallagher, who played Nina, has also starred over the years as did Faye Brookes, Lisa George, Jane Danson and Brooke Vincent amongst others.

This year, will see Sam compete against other actors, several reality TV stars, a stand-up comedian and a football pundit. The line-up includes TOWIE star Dan Edgar, who previously admitted he used to skate “every now and again” when he was younger. The reality TV star added: “It’s the dancing I’m a bit worried about because if you see me on the dance floor, it’s almost non existent, it’s terrible.”

The Traitors star Mollie Pearce also said she hasn’t “skated in years” except for the “odd time” at Christmas. She’s also described the experience prior to the live shows as “learning a new sport” and said it will push her out of her comfort zone.
