Chelsea have recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace as the club’s owners are blamed for the fiasco.
Chalobah headed out on loan to the Eagles in the summer when it seemed as if his days with the Blues were done. Chelsea copped huge criticism for how they treated the defender, whom they wanted to sell several months ago. Chalobah, who has been at the club since the age of eight, was banned from using the club’s first-team training facilities.
The 25-year-old was also excluded from Chelsea’s squad that travelled to the United States for pre-season, instead being made to train with Chelsea’s development squad. He eventually secured an exit and was expected to spend the year at Palace.
Now the club have committed a full u-turn and recalled Chalobah following injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, which is testing their resources. However his return has irked a host of supporters with Todd Boehly and co ultimately copping blame for backing those below them.
One supporter took aim at the hierarchy and said on social media: “In just six months, Chalobah has adapted to Enzo Maresca’s football, whilst not playing for Enzo Maresca, at a different club to Enzo Maresca. What a magician. Clueless SD’s (sporting directors) that need to go. Clueless owners who hired them, and still keeping them in their jobs. Embarrassing.”
Another fan added: “Trevoh Chalobah might be the most proper Chelsea player of all time. Gets banished from Cobham, agrees to come back from loan where he’d settled down because the club are desperate due to injuries and is going to get sold next summer. I don’t want to see any slander this season.”
Chalobah made 14 appearances in his five-month stint with Palace, scoring three times. That included their opening goal against rivals Brighton with the Eagles also keeping three clean sheets in that time.
Oliver Glasner confessed that the situation has left him frustrated with Chalobah expected to spend the season at Selhurst Park, but his early recall means the Blues stand to benefit whilst the Eagles are left looking for reinforcements.
He said: “I’m not sure disappointing is the right word. Trevoh had a great time with us. When you make a loan deal it is usually win-win for everyone, but now Chelsea are the biggest winners because they get a player back who scored three goals and is in much better shape than when he arrived.”
