Arne Slot has warned that Manchester City are still very much in the Premier League title race.
Liverpool are 12 points ahead of the defending champions as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest. The Reds also have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola’s side but boss Slot is refusing to rule them out of challenging for the crown this season – especially as they prepare to bolster their squad in this transfer window.
He said: “You can never rule them out. You can never rule City out and you can never rule Pep Guardiola out. They are able to win a lot of games in a row and then it all depends on the teams above them.
“Never rule City or Pep out, especially because if everything I read on Sky Sports every day, they are bringing in a completely new team! That is an extra reason to be aware that you can never rule them out.”
Liverpool have only lost one Premier League game so far this season and that was against Forest earlier in the campaign. The Tricky Trees are six points behind the Reds with Arsenal also the same amount off the pace having played a game more than the Merseysiders.
That has left Liverpool red-hot favourites to win a 20th league title and Slot insists they don’t need the motivation of City regaining form to fire them on. He said: “We don’t need extra motivation. The motivation comes from ourselves. We are in a great position.
“If we need any motivation from someone else when we are in a position like this, then these players would not deserve to wear the shirt or to play at this club. They definitely do deserve this, so we don’t need extra motivation to try as hard as we can.”
