Northamptonshire Police are offering a £35,000 reward to help track down ‘Britian’s most wanted’ murder suspect after a staggering 10 years on the run.
Dad-of-two Jon Casey, 35, was stabbed to death outside an Indian restaurant in Northampton on January 16, 2015 following a “vicious, brutal and merciless” attack. Following the horrific incident, police named Waijs Dahir as the prime suspect.
The University of Northampton student, who was 21 at the time, is believed to have travelled to Coventry on the day of the murder and fled the country the following day. The now 31-year-old is believed to currently be in Somalia or Kenya.
Northamptonshire Police today renewed an appeal for information on the 10th anniversary of Jon’s death in a bid to finally catch his killer. Jon’s family also released an emotional statement as they also pleaded to the public for help.
They said: “Ten years without Jon, a partner, a son, a brother and a daddy to two little girls, is a sadness beyond words.
“Knowing the cruel way he was a killed is a horror we have to live with every day. Time cannot ease our sadness or erase the horrific memories of that night.
“Living without justice, without the person that killed Jon being held accountable for the horror they put Jon through 10 years ago, and us for every day of the last 10 years, is a sadness that is hard to comprehend.
“Maybe, knowing that the person responsible for Jon’s vicious, brutal and merciless murder has been held accountable will help us all to heal a little. Our world has been a lot less fun without Jon in it.”
Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell said: “Although it’s been 10 years since Jon died, his family still carry their grief as if his murder happened yesterday and this is no surprise when you speak to them and understand just how deeply he was loved. Jon was a father to two children, a much-loved son, as well as a cherished brother and partner.
“There are so many people who still greatly feel his loss and these feelings are compounded by the knowledge that the person who killed him has not yet been brought to justice.
“If anyone has any knowledge as to where Waijs Dahir is, please contact us. If you do have information but are not sure whether to pass it on, please think of Jon’s family who have just had to spend their ninth Christmas without him.”
Jon was fatally knifed on Barrack Road, Northampton, close to the Lazeez restaurant, shortly before 5.30pm. An inquest heard Mr Casey died of chest wounds after he was “viciously stabbed.” On the fifth anniversary of his death in 2020, Mr Casey’s grieving mother Siobhan Bowe warned Dahir that her son “will haunt your dreams”.
In an open letter written to Dahir, she said: “I hope you remember with horror that cold dark January night five years ago when you murdered my son. I hope that, wherever you are, you have no peace, no resemblance of life as you knew it and no future.
“Most of all, I hope you know that although you have, so far, evaded justice, you are not free, you will never be free. We will always be looking for you and for justice.”
A £35,000 reward has been offered through independent charity Crimestoppers to anyone who provides police with information which leads to Dahir’s arrest.
