Severance season 2’s long-awaited premiere and season 1 gap explained

-

Severance season two will be hitting screens tomorrow (January 17) with audiences finally getting some answers about Lumon Industries, along with plenty more questions to keep them gripped.

Season one of the Dan Erickson-created drama originally premiered on Apple TV+ back on February 18, 2022 and episodes aired on a weekly basis.

The finale dropped on April 8, 2022 with the show getting rave reviews from the critics building up a loyal following.

However, since then the show has been offscreen until now, meaning there’s been a nearly three-year gap.

Hollywood star Ben Stiller – who also serves as an executive producer and director on Severance – addressed the long break between the first and second outings in a recent interview.

Stiller, 59, said: “I mean we got hit with the [Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA] strike in the middle and it takes a little while.

“I’m so happy we’re back and the fans who stuck with us from the first season,” he told the Today show.

Severance was just one of a multitude of shows delayed by the Hollywood strikes, which saw both writers and actors downing tools and thrashing out new contracts to combat the threat of AI, among other industry concerns.

Thankfully, it looks like any gap between season two and a potential third outing will be smaller.

Previously, creator Erickson, 40, said: “I certainly would like it to [take less time], yeah. And the conversations we have had about it, that’s been in the conversation.”

He explained how season two required the same amount of time to make as the first series.

Nonetheless, Erickson said he wanted to “fine-tune the process” and “streamline things” when making future seasons of Severance.

He added to Gizmodo: “So, my hope is that if there is a season three, it’s going to be sooner.”

The writer admitted he already knew how he planned to wrap up the Golden Globe-nominated series, which has garnered comparisons to Black Mirror.

Moreover, he suggested he had an idea about the number of seasons he planned the show to run for with a strong ending in place.
