Despite our sinks being used almost daily, most of us wouldn’t spare a thought for what’s lurking beneath the plug – and perhaps that’s for the best.
Cleaning up after meals inevitably takes its toll on your sink, regardless of how careful you are, and the result is probably far more disgusting than you’d imagine. A cleaning expert has now left followers horrified after revealing their trick for removing hidden sink grime, with some admitting they’re now too ‘scared to look’ at their own sinks after seeing the full grim reality.
A member of the team from kitchen gadget store Cultro, who goes by the username @cultrostore on TikTok, shared a video of the clever hack, which starts by removing the sink strainer or plug. The strainer or plug is then used to carefully unscrew the sinkhole, exposing the unpleasant build-up underneath.
The video reveals a thick brown mass that had accumulated under the plug hole, which would have remained blissfully out of sight if the plug hadn’t been removed. Thankfully, the video shows the mass being easily removed, leaving the sinkhole sparkling clean again after a good scrub. The video has since racked up over 1.5 million views, with many expressing shock at just how dirty the sink was.
Addressing a question about whether this applied to all stainless steel sinks, the influencer responded, “the smell was horrendous when I first took it out, but it’s as clean as a whistle now! ” Another user expressed their shock: “Man, first time I ever took mine off after watching this. It was filthy.”
Beyond the disgust, the hack received praise, with one commenter saying: “Honestly I am so chuffed I have seen this as it’s been doing my head in that my drains can smell that bad. This has actually made my evening seeing this.”
