Wrexham linked with nine January transfer targets including Liverpool star

-

Wrexham AFC have yet to make a move in the January transfer window, but that could change very soon.

Phil Parkinson’s team is currently sitting pretty in third place in League One as they head into the second half of the season. The club’s owners, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have indicated that they’re ready to back their manager as they aim for a third consecutive promotion.

One area where Wrexham appear keen to bolster is their attack, with star striker Paul Mullin struggling to find the net this season. After undergoing back surgery over the summer, bringing in another forward to lighten his load could be key.

The Red Dragons are known for making late moves in the transfer window, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they do the same this January. Despite the quiet start to the window, Wrexham has been linked with several potential targets.

Here, the Mirror takes a look at who might be turning up at the Racecourse Ground in the coming fortnight.

One of the biggest names linked with Wrexham this month is Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford. Despite previously impressing in the Premier League, the 31-year-old has yet to start a game for the Championship side this season and hasn’t found the back of the net in his 10 substitute appearances, reports Wales Online.

The Red Dragons were reportedly prepared to break the bank for Bamford, but a recent hamstring injury could put a damper on those plans.

Michael Smith, Sheffield Wednesday’s striker, was one of Parkinson’s primary transfer targets over the summer. Despite often coming off the bench, Smith has netted five goals for the Owls this season.

With his contract set to expire this summer, revisiting this move might be beneficial for all involved.

Wrexham are also said to have an interest in Leeds player Joe Gelhardt. The 22-year-old forward, who is rumoured to be joining Hull City, would have been quite the catch, although he has only recently returned from injury.

Reports are also circulating that Wrexham may sign Luton Town forward and former England U21 international Cauley Woodrow. The ex-Premier League striker has only started once for the Hatters in the Championship this season, but a move to north Wales could be on the cards, according to Football Insider.

The 30-year-old footballer, who has previously scored in the Premier League for Fulham and later played for Barnsley, made 24 appearances last season for his team, mainly as a substitute. His crowning moment was netting a last-gasp equaliser at Crystal Palace in March 2024, making sure the match ended 1–1 deep into stoppage time.

Jayden Danns represents an audacious target for Wrexham, given the young Liverpool prodigy found the back of the net recently during their 4-0 FA Cup triumph over Accrington Stanley. A loan seems to be the preferred choice if the clubs can strike a deal for the talented 18 year old, but they’ll likely face stiff competition with many Championship teams also keen to secure his services.

Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot is uncertain about whether Danns will be shipped out on loan this January, candidly admitting: “The last thing (going out on loan in January), I don’t know at the moment. For us, it was all about the players who hadn’t played that much yet, to give them playing time.”

In related transfer news, Bristol City forward Harry Cornick may well make the switch to Wrexham come January, following an announcement from his current boss Liam Manning that the 29 year old has the green light to look around during the transfer period. The former Luton player, versatile in attack and on the flanks, hasn’t seen any action in the Championship this term.

With Harry Cornick out of the picture at Ashton Gate, reporter Darren Witcoop suggests in a piece for X that Wrexham are poised to make a move, while Charlton Athletic from League One are also reportedly interested.

A new name on the scene is Dylan Levitt of Hibernian, the north Wales-born midfielder. The 23 year old has been under the radar at the Scottish Premiership club this season but shone in their recent 3-1 victory against Motherwell.

When quizzed post-match by Hibs Observer about transfer rumours to Wrexham, Levitt claimed ignorance, stressing his dedication to Hibs. He said: “As a professional footballer, if you don’t put in your best in every session, I think you’re only shooting yourself in the foot. You need to give 100 per cent every day. When called upon, you need to perform how you would in training and work hard towards it.”

In another potential high-profile move, Wrexham might have to dig deep into their pockets for Plymouth Argyle’s forward Ryan Hardie. The striker comes with a hefty £2m valuation as the Red Dragons gear up for a tussle with Huddersfield Town, their League One competitors, for the 27 year old’s signature.

The Scottish striker joined the Pilgrims in 2020 and has netted an impressive 64 goals in 230 appearances, helping the club climb from League Two to the Championship. His goal tally includes 12 in the second tier during Plymouth’s first season back in the division last term.

Meanwhile, Wrexham and Stockport County are reportedly set to go head-to-head for the loan signing of Manchester United’s young starlet, Ethan Wheatley, in the January transfer window. The two League One rivals have a history dating back to their National League days, with Stockport earning promotion as champions ahead of Wrexham.

According to the Wrexham Insider, the Red Dragons are keen not to lose out to Dave Challinor’s side again over the forward. However, Stockport may feel they have the upper hand in the race for Wheatley, given that the player was born in their town.
