West Indies outsmart Bangladesh in ODI series showdown

-

Following their defeat in the second ODI, Bangladesh is approaching the third and final match against the West Indies with a lack of confidence as the visitors seem to have figured out how to succeed on the Mirpur pitch.

In the initial ODI, Bangladesh dominated the West Indies, claiming victory by 74 runs. However, the tables turned in the subsequent game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with the hosts losing in a Super Over showdown.

The West Indies utilized an unconventional strategy, deploying three main spinners – Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase, and Khary Pierre – alongside part-timers Alick Athanaze and Gudakesh Motie, delivering a total of 50 overs of spin.

Bangladesh’s batsmen struggled to score runs against the spinners, evident from the 193 dot balls faced. Nearly half of their runs came from boundaries, whereas the West Indies relied more on singles and doubles, with only 35.6% of their runs coming from boundaries.

The West Indies had prepared for the spin challenge in Mirpur, sending players to train in Chennai before the series, a move that has evidently paid off.

Explaining the pitch choice, Soumya Sarkar, who scored 45 off 89 balls in the last game, mentioned that it was a decision made by the management, emphasizing the players’ adaptability to the given conditions.

This strategic approach highlights the planning flaws on Bangladesh’s part, as the anticipated spin advantage did not materialize in the second ODI.

Throughout the series, Bangladesh’s top-order batsmen have struggled for consistency, while the middle-order has played defensively, relying on late contributions to reach a competitive total.

Criticism also arose regarding the decision not to send Rishad Hossain, who scored an unbeaten 39 off 14 balls in the second game, for the Super Over.

Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz faced scrutiny for his decision-making, notably opting for Saif Hassan to bowl the final over instead of utilizing death-over specialist Mustafizur Rahman.

Today’s match holds significance beyond just series victory for Bangladesh, as they aim to reclaim their pride after faltering in the spin battle in the previous encounter.

To bounce back, Bangladesh’s management needs to refine their strategies, the captain must make astute decisions, and the batsmen must focus on constructing innings with minimal risk. Failure to address these issues could lead to a potential fifth consecutive ODI series defeat for Bangladesh.
