Donald Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that he is aware of the constitutional limits preventing him from running for a third term as President of the United States. Despite calls from his supporters for a potential 2028 presidential bid, Trump emphasized that he respects the two-term limit outlined in the US Constitution.
“I have been seeing my highest poll numbers ever, but it seems that I am not permitted to seek reelection, so we will wait and see what unfolds… It’s unfortunate,” Trump remarked while aboard Air Force One.
The US Constitution mandates that presidents can only serve two terms, with Trump currently in his second term since January. Although his backers have expressed a desire for him to continue leading beyond his current tenure, Trump frequently mentions the constitutional constraints.
In a symbolic gesture, Trump displayed red hats with “Trump 2028” on his Oval Office desk, hinting at a potential future run. Speculation among supporters included the idea of his current vice president, JD Vance, running for president in 2028 alongside Trump. However, Vance dismissed this notion and Trump clarified on Wednesday that he recognizes the legal limitations preventing him from seeking another term.
“We have many talented individuals,” Trump stated, acknowledging the support from his followers while acknowledging the constitutional regulations.
