Love Island star Tommy Fury revealed his problems with getting ‘blackout drunk’ as he opened up about his mental health problems.
The boxer, 25, slammed the claims he cheated on Molly-Mae Hague and revealed the real reason behind their split after five years together. He said he became ‘addicted to drinking’ and “couldn’t be the partner that he wanted to be anymore.” The former couple met on Love Island in 2019.
Molly-Mae and Tommy share a daughter named Bambi and got engaged in the summer of 2023. However, it all came crashing down when they shocked fans with the news of their split last summer. He hasn’t spoken about what truly happened between the iconic couple until now.
Speaking about his boozing, he said: “It’s not like I’d get up in the morning and start drinking, but rather than sit in bed all day and fester, I’d think ‘why not go out?’ Where I’d normally be in camp, I’d just be smashing Guinness left and centre and then later on in the night shots would come out.
“Most nights I would drink to get blackout drunk. I think that’s what really took its toll on me.” In the interview with Men’s Health, he said “people go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I’ve got mine to bear.”
Tommy then explains to the publication how his issues with booze began after he snapped the ligaments in his hand in 2019, which eventually led to reconstructive surgery at the start of last year. He admits his “mental health was in the pan” after the operation and he felt a part of his identity was removed when he could no longer box or train.
His ‘blackout’ drinking sessions – which saw him party with controversial American singer Chris Brown in August – led to the end of his relationship with Molly. However, despite being in a dark place, he never cheated on the star and maintained a close and loving relationship with his daughter Bambi.
Molly-Mae previously revealed she doesn’t like to drink alcohol. The star said watching her mother turn to alcohol to cope with the pain of a marriage break-up “sort of explains” why she avoids drinking too much. She explained how her mum began “playing catch-up in terms of what she missed out on” after her parents split, going on dating websites and going on nights out.
“In that first year after the divorce, Mum really struggled. For a very short while just after the divorce, she turned to alcohol to cope with the pain of the breakdown of their marriage,” Molly-Mae wrote in her memoir.
