“This is a massive honour for me. I thank the BCB for trusting me with this responsibility. I am aware that I have huge shoes to fill as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been a true great for Bangladesh cricket and a model of inspiration as captain for me and all the cricketers,” said Tamim

Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced the name of Tamim Iqbal as the new ODI captain of Bangladesh men’s cricket team and the experienced cricketer took it as an honour.

“This is a massive honour for me. I thank the BCB for trusting me with this responsibility. I am aware that I have huge shoes to fill as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been a true great for Bangladesh cricket and a model of inspiration as captain for me and all the cricketers,” said Tamim.

Tamim, the highest run-getter of the format as a Bangladeshi with 7,202 runs till date, made his debut back in 2007 but never was appointed as captain of the side for a permanent basis.

Tamim has been the vice captain of the team for several terms, but this is the first time he has been selected for the captaincy on a long-term basis.  He had captained Bangladesh during a three-match ODI series away against Sri Lanka just after the 2019 World Cup, when Mashrafe was injured. Bangladesh lost the series 3-0.

“The journey that begins now will have its ups and downs. We all want the Bangladesh ODI Team to be successful and when we are victorious it is a celebration for the entire nation. I hope the Board, the fans and the media will support me through the tough moments as well as during the good times,” added the new ODI captain.
