In the midst of a photo shoot in Dhanmondi, my day took a familiar turn. The lighting was ideal, the model was finally cooperative, and then my photographer, Shourav, declared his hunger. Those who have dealt with a hungry photographer know it’s akin to negotiating with a CNG during a monsoon. Reluctantly, I agreed and set out to find something quick, comforting, and budget-friendly.
This led me to the Dhanmondi branch of Shang High, a spot that had been on my radar for quite some time but had yet to be explored. I first heard about it during their early days at Naveed’s Comedy Club, where it started as a humble food cart nestled in a vibrant corner of the venue. Patrons would stand in line for a few minutes, place an order for dumplings, and indulge in the affordable, speedy, and surprisingly delicious fare.
The transition from a cart to a full-fledged restaurant seemed unusually swift for Dhaka’s usual food scene pace. What began as a modest cart evolved into a single outlet, then expanded to include more locations across the city, with branches in Gulshan, Banani, Mirpur, and the one I visited in Dhanmondi. While many assume success in the culinary world requires grand concepts or hefty investments, Shang High thrived by keeping prices reasonable and maintaining consistent flavors.
Upon entering their Dhanmondi establishment, one is struck by the retro vibes exuding from the place. The colors are subtly inviting, catching the eye effortlessly. A claw machine hangs near the entrance, accompanied by an arcade game. The seating arrangement is unassuming, creating a casual atmosphere conducive to socializing.
By nightfall, the ambiance undergoes a transformation, emanating a different energy as the lights warm up and the neighborhood quiets down. The space becomes livelier, with the retro elements seamlessly blending into the overall vibe, steering clear of excessive nostalgia and instead fostering a grounded atmosphere.
Witnessing a local brand expand while staying true to its roots is truly refreshing. In a city where eateries often lose their original charm within a short period, Shang High has managed to retain its essence of providing simple yet fulfilling dining experiences. The Dhanmondi outlet, in particular, embodies the genuine spirit of this culinary journey.
This establishment serves as a testament to how Dhaka’s food scene flourishes when simplicity is embraced and nurtured. From its humble beginnings as a cart at a comedy club to multiple branches scattered across the city, the growth of Shang High has been gradual yet effective, emphasizing the power of good food at reasonable prices and a deep understanding of the local community.
