“Sangkalan Exhibition Celebrates Language Movement Legacy”

-

An upcoming exhibition in Dhaka will delve into the role of newspapers, pamphlets, and literary supplements in shaping public memory during the 1952 Language Movement. The exhibition, named “Sangkalan,” is set to debut on February 20 at Galerie Zoom within Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi, running until February 28. It will explore how vernacular print media, such as magazines, literary supplements, pamphlets, and posters, served as tools of resistance, documentation, and collective identity in the aftermath of the Language Movement.

The showcase, curated to blend archival and contemporary elements, will feature original materials alongside meticulously reproduced prints. These pieces will illustrate how advocacy for linguistic rights permeated everyday publishing practices, molding political consciousness and cultural recollection across successive generations.

Rather than fixating on historical retelling, the exhibition will spotlight the evolving visual lexicon of protest and commemoration. Typography, illustration techniques, and editorial formats will be presented as cultural relics in their own regard, showcasing how print media emerged as a democratic conduit for the dissemination of ideas beyond formal settings.

In addition to showcasing archival items, “Sangkalan” will unveil newly crafted postcards and posters inspired by historical publications. A curated array of contemporary artworks inspired by vernacular print customs will further extend the discourse into the present, underscoring the enduring presence of language activism within Bangladesh’s artistic and intellectual milieu.

The exhibition’s timing precedes International Mother Language Day on February 21, a period marked by deep contemplation of linguistic identity and cultural legacy in Bangladesh. By juxtaposing historical records with contemporary interpretations, the organizers aim to portray print culture not just as a testament to past struggles but as an ongoing interplay between memory and contemporary expression.

Scheduled to run from February 20 to 28, 2026, the exhibition’s grand opening is slated for 6:30 pm on February 20 at Galerie Zoom, Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi. Visitor hours will be from 3 pm to 9 pm, excluding Sundays when the gallery will be closed. The exhibition welcomes all attendees to explore its offerings.
