A new theatrical adaptation of Humayun Ahmed’s literary works, presented by Sketch Gallery Nandon, took place at the Theatre Institute Chittagong (TIC) auditorium. The performance, titled “Saajghar,” was written and directed by Sahriar Hannan. The play was showcased twice on Saturday, at 5:00pm and 7:30pm, as per the organizers’ press statement.
Sahriar described “Saajghar” not only as a theatrical piece but also as a deep dive into the inner conflict of an actor torn between artistic expression and personal identity. The play provided a raw depiction of the sacrifices and challenges faced within group theatre.
Unveiling the hidden realities of life backstage, the play delved into themes of camaraderie, love, jealousy, solitude, self-discovery, and the enduring allure of art. Set against the backdrop of familiar theatrical settings like rehearsal spaces, wings, and shadowy backstage corridors, the narrative followed a group of aspiring artists striving to keep the spotlight on amidst financial instability. It served as a tribute to the art form while also serving as a reflection on the theatre’s inner workings.
The ensemble cast included Sanjib Barua, Bijon Majumdar, Sucharit Dash Khokon, Rahima Khatun Luna, Shaheen Chowdhury, Ashish Nandi, Bikiron Barua, Mamun Nazim, Dhiman Das, Salma Jahan, Bushra Al Mobashwera, Mamura Momtaz Dipa, and Shariar Hannan.
“Saajghar” was crafted as an intimate production that emphasized the emotional depth of the performers over grandiosity. Viewers were treated to a profound theatrical experience characterized by intimate staging, cohesive ensemble performances, and a spotlight on the personal toll of pursuing theatre in today’s Bangladesh.
