An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight with police in Jhenaidah’s Maheshpur upazila early on Tuesday.

The deceased, Shahrul Islam alias Khokon Hossain, 35, was wanted in several cases.

Maheshpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rashedul Alam said the robbers, who were preparing for robbery on the Kaliganj-Jibannagar route, opened fire on a patrolling police team.

The police fired several rounds in retaliation, triggering the gunfight, the OC said.

Police found the injured Khokon and recovered a shutter gun, one round of ammunition and several sharp weapons, while the other robbers managed to flee the scene at one point of the gunfight, said the OC.

Police took Khokon to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, added the OC.
