Dhaka’s drumming community congregated in Tejgaon on Saturday evening under the guidance of Syed Ziaur Rahman Turjo, the renowned drummer of the iconic band Miles, for the inaugural session of the freshly introduced Drum Master Class (DMC).
The event is part of the larger Musician’s Master Class (MMC) project, aimed at providing structured educational opportunities for musicians throughout Bangladesh. Hosted at the Yamaha Flagship Center, the session was arranged by Team Alpha, sponsored by Bruvana Beverage Limited, and supported by HAVIT, with plans for 24 sessions over the next two years.
Turjo, known for his adaptability and dynamic drumming style, delivered a comprehensive session covering fundamental rhythms, advanced techniques, stage presence, performance dynamics, and the significance of connecting with the audience. He emphasized that drumming goes beyond keeping time, highlighting its role in storytelling through rhythm.
In addition to the instructional session, a drum competition was held where participants showcased their skills on a drumless track. Turjo selected and awarded the winner, offering aspiring drummers a chance to display their talent to one of the country’s most respected percussionists.
The Drum Master Class (DMC) is a specialized branch of MMC tailored for percussionists and drummers, focusing on providing training, artistic development, networking opportunities, and professional guidance to musicians across Bangladesh.
With Turjo laying the foundation in the initial session, organizers are optimistic that the series will contribute to nurturing a vibrant musical community by bridging the gap between established artists and up-and-coming talent.
