“Rampant Mob Violence Threatens Rule of Law”

-

The recurring incidents of mob violence have become a daunting challenge, highlighting the failure of authorities to uphold the rule of law despite the aspirations for change following the July uprising. The increasing frequency of mob attacks raises concerns about law enforcement’s ability to manage such complex threats effectively.

Law enforcement’s inability to prevent mob violence has been starkly evident in recent times. In the first ten days of August, there were reportedly 13 cases of mob beatings resulting in nine fatalities. Since January 2025, the death toll from mob attacks has reached 87 according to Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation, while Ain o Salish Kendra reports a higher figure of 111. The brutal killings of Rupalal Das and Pradip Das in Rangpur on August 9 serve as a chilling example of the escalating violence.

In the case of Rangpur, a series of thefts and a murder within a short distance of each other had instilled fear and anger among residents, leading them to organize night patrols. Tragically, Rupalal and Pradip fell victim to this atmosphere of paranoia. Effective law enforcement could have potentially altered the outcome.

According to reports, the two men were fatally attacked by a mob on suspicion of van theft while police, initially present at the scene, retreated due to fear, only returning with army personnel after an hour. This incident raises questions about law enforcement’s reluctance to confront mobs directly.

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul suggested in a recent interview that the police may struggle to address mobs incited by factions associated with the July uprising. However, the government must also bear responsibility for the failure to take decisive action. Political actors are believed to play a role in fueling mob violence, exacerbating the existing challenges.

A recent survey revealed that 80% of citizens are concerned about mob violence and demand effective measures to curb such incidents and address underlying issues contributing to desperation and exploitation. Reforming the justice system is essential to rebuild public confidence. Tackling this menace requires a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders, including political parties, to bring an end to this cycle of violence and restore peace in society.
