Protests erupted in Jhenaidah today following the assignment of Sudipta Kumar Singh as the new Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Harinakundu upazila. Singh was recently transferred from Sarankhola upazila in Bagerhat. Demonstrators gathered outside the Jhenaidah deputy commissioner’s office in a human chain organized by the “Fascism Resistance Students’ Alliance.” They urged authorities to prevent Singh from assuming his new role.
Former leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jhenaidah, along with members of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Islami Chhatra Andolan, took part in the protest, displaying banners and placards. Several individuals, including Abu Huraira, Saidur Rahman, Masud Parvez, M Abdur Rahman, and Mahbubur Rahman, addressed the gathering.
The speakers accused UNO Sudipta of misconduct, extortion, and working against public and student welfare during his time in Sarankhola, Bagerhat. They alleged that he had a history of opposing student movements and engaging in corrupt practices. The demonstrators emphasized their stance against allowing corrupt or authoritarian officials to hold positions in Jhenaidah and called for stringent actions to combat corruption and malpractices in government institutions.
