One Liverpool transfer would convince Jamie Carragher they’re winning the league

-

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Arne Slot‘s squad to be strengthened with the final piece to their Premier League-winning puzzle.

Despite the Dutchman’s side only losing one game this season, recent draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest have allowed Arsenal to close in, reducing the lead to just four points.

With a long season ahead, defensive injuries have mounted. Ibrahima Konate was sidelined for a lengthy period, and though he now returns to the backline, Joe Gomez is still out with a hamstring injury, sustained just after Christmas.

Carragher, who kitted out over 700 times for the Reds, fears that a lack of reinforcements at the back could leave his former side struggling. That’s why he wants them to sign a versatile, left-sided defender this January, believing that would make the title as good as theirs.

“I look at Liverpool, and it will be giving Arsenal confidence that defensively, at this moment, they’re not great in the full-back areas,” Carragher stated on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is that type of player that you can get in behind him. Currently, Andy Robertson is finding it hard. We’ve all been there as players, and he’s going through that right now.

“Liverpool haven’t got a player that every other club has – a left-sided defender who can play centre-back or left-back. Arsenal have got Riccardo Calafiori, Manchester United have got Lisandro Martínez, Chelsea have got Levi Colwill, and Manchester City have got Nathan Aké.

“Even Tottenham have Micky van de Ven. Liverpool need that left-sided defender who can do a bit of both. If Liverpool sign that player in January, I’d be certain that they’d win the league.”

After Tuesday’s defeat in Nottingham, the Anfield legend took to social media platform X with a straightforward demand: “Buy a defender!!!” With the left side pinpointed as a weak spot, several players have been associated with a potential move.

Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies have all seen their names linked, but Carragher would rather a signing also capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back to practically clinch the club’s record-equalling 20th league title.
