Oldham hospital stabbing: First picture of nurse ‘attacked with scissors’ as ‘good news’ emerges

-

The first picture has emerged of a nurse after she was allegedly stabbed with scissors.

Achamma Cherian was seriously injured after being attacked on Saturday night at the Royal Oldham Hospital’s acute medical unit. A man, Rumon Haque, has since been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

The nurse, who is in her 50s, is known as Asha to friends and family, Manchester Evening News reports. The hospital trust has since confirmed Ms Cherian is recovering at home after being discharged.

“It was a heavily distressing event for all concerned,” the chief executive of the NHS trust which runs the Royal Oldham Hospital today (Wednesday, January 15). “Thankfully, our colleague is now at home, which is good news.”

Dr Owen Williams, who heads the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust – which operates Royal Oldham – said “the impact of these events has been quite significant” for “several colleagues”. Dr Williams told an NHS Greater Manchester board meeting on Wednesday that the hospital was “trying to get as much wrap-around support for them as possible”.

Adding that the trust would be involved in court proceedings, he also extended the hospital’s thanks to NHS workers across the country who had rallied to support them after Saturday’s alleged events.

Rumon Haque, 37, from Royton, Manchester, appeared before Manchester magistrates court on Tuesday for a brief hearing, where the case was passed onto the crown courts. Haque spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address at the hearing, with no please entered. He was remanded into custody ahead of his next appearance at Manchester Minshull Street crown court next month.
