Just hours after a deadly attack tore apart the heart of New Orleans, the families of those that sadly lost their lives have slowly been coming forwards to share their grief
As many families across America rang in the New Year on Wednesday, at least fifteen were sadly torn apart after their loved ones were tragically killed in a suspected terror attack in New Orleans.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, plowed his pickup truck from Canal Street into Bourbon Street at about 3:15am on New Year’s Day, the FBI told reporters on Wednesday. An ISIS flag was visible on the vehicle, and weapons and a potential improvised explosive device were found inside.
So far, no official confirmation has been given regarding the identity of the victims, but the loved ones of those sadly killed in the attack have been slowly coming forwards on social media to pay tribute to those they have lost.

Among the people killed are an 18 year old woman, a 37 year old father of two, a former Football player aged just 27, and a 28 year old mum, who has now left behind a 4 year old son to mourn her passing.
Here’s everything we know about the reported victims so far…
Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, 18
Nikyra, 18, originally from Gulfport, Mississippi, had been due to start a nursing programme in January, to follow in the footsteps of her mother, who herself was a dedicated nurse. Sadly the promising young student was killed on Tuesday evening, when she was hit by a pickup truck after coming to New Orleans to celebrate the New Year with her cousin and a friend, according to the people she was with.
Affectionately known as “Biscuit” to her friends, and Cheyenne to her family, her friend Zion Parsons said Dedeaux “was never down, or grumpy,” and instead he referred to her as a “a little ball of sunshine” who often made a point of cheering up her friends and spreading positivity.
“You know those kinds of people where you can’t find a reason to dislike them? She was one of those people,” Parsons told NOLA.
Her mother, Melissa Dedeaux also spoke fondly of her daughter despite the tragedy of her loss, as she recalled how she had always been the one to gather “carloads” of friends and enjoyed spending time with them. Dedeaux, 40, added: “I just want to see my baby. She was the sweetest person. She would give you anything, anything.”
Reggie Hunter, 37

Baton Rouge warehouse manager Reggie Hunter was another of the victims identified by family members, with his cousin Shirell Jackson, revealing that the father of two had only decided to head to Bourbon Street on a whim Tuesday before the tragedy struck. Both Reggie and another cousin were hit by the truck, and while Hunter died from his injuries, his cousin remains in hospital with extensive internal injuries.
Hunter leaves behind two sons, an 11 year old and an 18 month old, and had been staunchly proud of his eldest son’s accomplishments in the STEM field.
Reflecting on the loss of her cousin, a heartbroken Shirell said: “You are praying for a prosperous year in 2025. And never do you think this is the news you are going to get.”She tld ABC News: “He did not deserve this. It’s senseless; it’s cruel. …I wish none of this had ever happened. This is hurting all of us differently and on so many levels. We were expecting so much life to live with our cousin … Just a beautiful person who did not deserve this and had so much more life to live.”
Tiger Bech, 27
Lafayette native and former football star Tiger Bech, 27, is also one of the victims who lost their lives during the attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after suffering catastrophic injuries. Tiger had been enjoying the festivities when he was hit by the suspect’s truck, according to Kim Broussard, the athletic director at St. Thomas More Catholic High School, where Bech played football before going on to play for Princeton University.
He went on to graduate from the university in 2021 with a degree in finance and worked as a trader at a New York brokerage firm. He had only returned to New Orleans to celebrate the holidays.
Reflecting on her son’s death, Michelle Bech told ABC news that her son was amazing, lived life to the fullest and was “on top of the world,” prior to his death. She also revealed that her son was in Louisiana for a long weekend of hunting and fishing, two of his favourite activities, with college friends from Princeton.
Nicole Perez, 27
Another life lost in the tragedy was Nicole Perez, with her death confirmed by Kimberly Usher-Fall, her employer and family spokesperson.
Shortly before her death, Usher-Fall revealed that Nicole had been promoted to a manager at one of her stores and she was really excited about the position. She even revealed that Perez had brought her 4-year-old son, Melo (Melvin), with her to work and she was helping him learn how to read.
Nicole had been out with friends to celebrate the new year when she was struck by the truck. She was taken to University Hospital but later died from her injuries. Following her death, Usher Fall set up a go-fund me page to help raise funds to support Nicole’s young son and family.
“She was so beautiful and full of life,” wrote Kimberley. “Her son Melo is now without his momma, and we are without our friend and dedicated employee. I’m hoping to get some help for her burial expenses and to help her son with expenses he will need to transition into a new living situation.”
