Neglected Lioness Daisy Exposes Crisis at Mirpur Zoo

-

After breaking free from her enclosure at Mirpur National Zoo, initial reports instilled fear of a loose predator and public safety concerns. However, subsequent images painted a starkly different picture of Daisy. Instead of a powerful predator, she appeared frail and malnourished, with visible ribcage, patchy fur, and sunken, tired eyes. Rather than exuding strength, she seemed to be struggling to survive.

Her escape did not unveil imminent danger but rather exposed the long-standing issue of neglect at Mirpur National Zoo, also known as the Bangladesh National Zoo. The zoo has been under scrutiny for years due to various chronic problems such as inadequate funding for animal feed, shortage of veterinary personnel, cramped living spaces, and outdated facilities.

The distressing state of Daisy indicates that these concerns were not addressed but rather overlooked. Reza Karim, an expert on captive animal welfare, emphasized that Daisy’s severe emaciation was a result of prolonged malnourishment, chronic stress, or untreated illnesses, which he deemed unacceptable for an apex predator residing in a national zoo.

Despite claims of conservation and educational benefits, zoos must go beyond mere confinement and uphold operational efficiencies, skilled staff, and ethical practices. In Bangladesh, the disparity between theoretical objectives and practical implementations is widening.

Visitors frequently observe animals displaying signs of zoochosis, such as restless pacing, excessive sleeping, and distress. The enclosures often lack enrichment, are barren, and fall short of global standards in terms of size. Many structures are outdated and have not undergone significant upgrades in years.

Farzana Shurovi, an environmental studies graduate and frequent zoo-goer, expressed disappointment in the deteriorating conditions of the animals, leading her to stop bringing her relatives to the zoo. Daisy’s escape may have been an act of desperation rather than aggression, shedding light on the dire situation within the zoo.

Despite existing animal welfare laws in Bangladesh, enforcement remains weak. Following Daisy’s ordeal, public outrage has surged online, with many questioning the necessity of zoos if proper care cannot be ensured for captive animals.

Mahfuz Rahman, a concerned parent who visited the zoo, highlighted the impact of witnessing a starving lioness on children’s perceptions of wildlife. The sentiment is growing that Bangladesh should explore alternatives like rehabilitation centers, sanctuaries, or reducing the number of captive animals.

Globally, modern zoos are expected to prioritize replicating natural habitats, upholding welfare standards, and demonstrating tangible conservation outcomes, areas where Mirpur Zoo struggles. Daisy’s plight serves as a testament to the zoo’s failing structure.

While efforts to aid Daisy are crucial, the broader conversation must focus on reevaluating Bangladesh’s approach to wildlife. The country must decide if it wants to perpetuate a system that cannot adequately care for caged animals or if it is time to reimagine a more humane and sustainable model.

Mirpur Zoo’s current state is unsustainable, and failure to take action could lead to more distressing headlines in the future, posing a significant risk to both the animals and the zoo’s reputation.
