Narayanganj Ex-Mayor Ivy Granted Bail in Murder Case

-

The former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor, Selina Hayat Ivy, has been granted bail by the High Court in five separate cases, including one related to the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam during the July Uprising. The bail was approved by a bench comprising Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Sagir Hossain after considering five petitions filed by Ivy seeking bail in these cases, according to Deputy Attorney General Sultana Akhter Rubi.

In case the Appellate Division does not intervene to halt the High Court’s decision, Ivy will be released from jail, as mentioned by Advocate SM Hridoy Rahman, who represented Ivy. Barrister Sara Hossain, along with advocates Md Motahar Hossain Sazu and SM Hridoy Rahman, appeared on Ivy’s behalf during the bail petition hearing.

Earlier in May, a lower court had rejected Ivy’s bail plea in the case concerning Minarul’s death. The incident occurred on July 20 last year in Narayanganj’s Adamji area, where Minarul Islam was fatally shot during demonstrations organized by students and workers as part of an anti-discrimination student movement. He was rushed to Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur but was pronounced dead by doctors.

On September 23, Minarul’s brother, Nazmul Haque, lodged a murder case at Siddhirganj Police Station, naming ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 132 others as accused, including about 300 unidentified individuals. Selina Hayat Ivy was identified as the 12th accused in the case. Subsequently, Ivy was arrested in connection with several other cases.
