British police detained two individuals following a large-scale stabbing incident on a train bound for London on Saturday night, resulting in 10 individuals being hospitalized, with nine sustaining severe injuries. The incident prompted a significant response with armed police, police vehicles, and ambulances converging on a railway station in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
“Ten people were hospitalized after multiple stabbings on a train in Cambridgeshire, with nine facing life-threatening injuries,” stated British Transport Police, who also mentioned the involvement of counter-terrorism units in the ongoing investigation. The train was en route from Doncaster to London’s King’s Cross Station, a popular route for commuters.
Eyewitnesses recounted seeing a man wielding a large knife, causing chaos and panic among passengers as some sought refuge in washrooms while others attempted to flee, resulting in injuries. Reports indicated that the assailant was eventually subdued by police after the train came to a stop.
Reacting to the distressing events, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep concern, extending thoughts to those affected and praising the swift response of emergency services. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the incident.
Armed police were promptly dispatched to the scene following the distress call shortly after the train’s departure from Peterborough in the late evening. The train was being treated as a crime scene as investigations unfolded, with individuals receiving assistance outside the station under emergency blankets.
The East of England Ambulance Service coordinated a comprehensive response at Huntingdon station, deploying ambulances, air ambulances, and tactical commanders to manage the situation. Train services were disrupted as a result, with passengers advised against travel due to the closure of railway lines in the vicinity.
The surge in knife-related crimes in England and Wales since 2011 has raised concerns, despite stringent gun control measures in place. The UK government has intensified efforts to combat knife crime, resulting in the seizure of tens of thousands of knives with the aim of reducing such incidents over the next decade. Recent stabbing incidents, including the tragic events in Manchester and London, have underscored the urgency of addressing this issue.
