Tommy Fury has addressed the reason for his break up with Molly-Mae Hague – but it’s something Molly had already hinted at it a long time ago.
The couple who met on season five of Love Island were together for five years before they split. Blighted by rumours of cheating after their breakup, Tommy revealed it was because of his drinking and alcohol dependency, and nothing to do with infidelity.
However Molly had been open about her issues with Tommy’s drinking even before their split, writing in her book how they would ‘row’ when he drank.
The pair met in 2019, welcomed their daughter Bambi in 2023 and were engaged six months later before splitting up in August last year. In a new interview, the boxer blamed his dependency on alcohol after sustaining a boxing injury for their split, and vehemently denied ever cheating on Molly. He slammed rumours of the huge online speculation as ‘complete and utter b***ocks.’
Entrepreneur and former Love Island star Molly Mae said she had an issue with 25-year-old Tommy’s drinking throughout their relationship, and back in 2022, detailed in her book Becoming Molly-Mae how they’d row over it. She shared: “The only major arguments Tommy and I have had have been to do with him drinking, which he only does a few times a year.
“He won’t even do anything wrong; I’ll just lose it at him because I hate it. I do have this anxiety around alcohol and the things I’ve seen it do to the people around me – I personally don’t think that alcohol adds anything good to a situation.”
Molly shocked fans when she announced the split in a statement posted to her Instagram, which fuelled the cheating rumours. The social media star was never one to shy away from talking about her avoidance to booze, admitting in her book she doesn’t have the “best relationship” with alcohol and rarely drinks.
She detailed her own mother’s battle with alcohol in the wake of a split, saying it left her “heartbroken”. “Mum really struggled. For a very short while just after the divorce, she turned to alcohol to cope with the pain of the breakdown of their marriage,” she wrote.
“Which sort of explains why I am the way I am with alcohol – I pretty much avoid it. I associate these difficult times after my parents’ divorce with alcohol being involved and my mum drinking too much – understandably, because her marriage had broken down.” The Instagram influencer also confesses that she felt she had to care for her mother for a while, describing that period as a “kind of role reversal”.
Tommy admitted he wasn’t able to be the partner he wanted to be due to his addiction and told Men’s Health: “The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore. It kills me to say it, [but] it’s true, I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is. People go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I’ve got mine to bear.”
He shared how his booze addiction was fuelled after he snapped the ligament in his hand in 2019 and had surgery on it last year. Tommy said his “mental health was in the pan” after the operation and he felt a part of his identity was removed when he could no longer box or train.
Leading to “black out drunk” drinking sessions, where he was spotted drinking with American singer Chris Brown in August in Abu Dhabi. The pair also reportedly had got into a heated row after the professional boxer allegedly left their daughter Bambi with a nanny to go on a night out with his friends last year – which sources close to the couple say put a “huge strain” and tension on their relationship.
What is said to have hurt Molly the most was Tommy’s decision to leave Bambi in the care of the nanny instead of looking after her himself. The incident apparently led to a blazing row and Molly-Mae was left ‘deeply upset’ with Tommy over his behaviour.
