Met Office issues rare fog warning as Brits must do five things before driving

-

Met Office forecasters have warned Brits to take five steps as they release a weather warning for “dense” fog.

The meteorological agency issued the rare warning earlier this evening, stating that it may become difficult to see beyond 100 metres in the more than a dozen areas set to be affected. The warning is in place until 11am tomorrow, and motorists have been told to take particular care, with conditions on the road becoming potentially perilous for some.

The Met Office outlined five key steps for people to take as the fog drifts across England and Wales, including checking road conditions and leaving more time for journeys. The advisory states: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary.

“Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey. Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice. Be prepared for weather warnings to change.

“When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.” The agency adds that fog will be “dense” in some places, reducing visibility to below 100 metres and creating especially dangerous conditions for drivers.

The warning states: “Areas of fog will continue to develop through Wednesday evening and overnight and, in places, will be dense with visibility below 100 metres. Some of the fog will tend to thin and lift into low cloud across parts of southern England and the southeast Midlands by dawn, but is likely to persist in a corridor from southwest England through the rest of the Midlands to Lincolnshire and Yorkshire until late morning.”

The warning will affect the following areas from 8pm today to 11am on Thursday:
