Liverpool transfer news: Real Madrid admit Trent Alexander-Arnold defeat as Barcelona eye move

-

Liverpool have two weeks left if they fancy conducting any business this January.

The Reds currently lead the Premier League and are the clear favourites to lift the title come May. But before that, Arne Slot’s side could consider signings to get them over the line.

Even away from that, Liverpool might need some additions to replace some of their current stars. Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract in the summer.

Merseyside chiefs have been attempting to extend the trio’s stays with the club but they have had no luck so far. With that being said, take a look at the latest transfer news and rumours:

Amid Trent Alexander-Arnold’s failure to sign a new deal with Liverpool, he has been pursued by Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are keen to sign him in the summer, but did try and get him six months early.

All of their approaches have so far been turned down by Liverpool and it appears that they are ready to admit defeat. As per Revelo, the Spanish giants believe it is ‘practically impossible’ to sign him this month due to Liverpool’s stance.

Instead, they are resigned to signing him in the summer once his contract on Merseyside expires. Madrid chiefs have apparently given their approval to shelving a move and it remains to be seen whether they move for a short-term alternative right-back amid Dani Carvajal’s injury issues.

While Alexander-Arnold looks set to be on the way to Spain sooner rather than later, one of his current teammates could follow him. According to Antena2, Barcelona are ready to lodge an offer for Luis Diaz in the summer.

It is suggested that they could table €70million having been long-term admirers of the Colombian winger. Diaz, 28, has two-and-a-half years left to run on his Liverpool deal.

It is suggested that he will want an improved contract to stay at Anfield for the foreseeable future. Italian side AC Milan have also been linked with him in the past.

Liverpool have been told that Mohamed Salah is ‘irreplaceable’ as the row over his contract goes on. That is the view of former striker Emile Heskey, who said: “It’s difficult to say who will be the biggest loss in the summer for Liverpool.

“If you lose Mohamed Salah – how much does his replacement cost you? Can you even replace him? Who’s putting numbers up like Salah? Absolutely no one.

“I understand his age but that really doesn’t show in his performances, he doesn’t stop running in his games and his stats speak for themselves. He’s irreplaceable.”
