Liverpool transfer news: Arne Slot admits mistake as swap deal suggested

-

Liverpool are gearing up for a huge Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest this evening.

Arne Slot’s team have a six point lead on top of the table with a game in hand over Nuno Espirito Santo’s surprise package, who sit third behind Arsenal on goal difference.

And Slot, who will be without defender Joe Gomez and centre forward Darwin Nunez, is expecting a big test against a team that has already won at Anfield this season.

Here are the big stories from in and around Anfield as a hitherto January transfer window reaches its midway point.

Liverpool could use Ben Doak as a makeweight to sign Bournemouth standout Antoine Semenyo.

The Cherries are reportedly interested in signing Doak, 19, who has been a regular in the Championship for play-off contenders Middlesborough this season. And that coincides with Liverpool taking a liking to Semenyo.

The Ghana international, 25, is a key part of the side that Andoni Iraola has surprisingly mounted a European football push with. That’s why a £50million price tag has been slapped on him for the January transfer window.

While it, therefore, looks likely any business between the two Premier League clubs will be put on hold until the summer, Doak’s performances put his parent club in a strong negotiating position.

Liverpool will be without Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez when they face Nottingham Forest.

The Reds head to the City Ground looking for redemption after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side handed Liverpool their only Premier Leaguedefeat of the season so far. They will do so short of two players however.

Slot revealed that Gomez was still ‘far’ from a return after picking up a hamstring injury against West Ham before the turn of the year. The England international was the only defensive player named as unavailable by the Dutchman, despite Ibrahima Konate’s absence against Accrington Stanley.

Nunez meanwhile is serving a one-match ban having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Manchester United. The striker would be unlikely to start the game however, and endured a fruitless afternoon during Liverpool’s FA Cup third round win.

Slot provided an update on his squad here and admitted to a mistake.

Arne Slot is in no doubt Nottingham Forest are Premier League title challengers.

Liverpool head to the City Ground on Tuesday night with a six-point lead over the Tricky Trees and a game in hand. But a win for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would really turn the heat up on the Reds.

Forest stunned Liverpool back in September when they pulled off a 1-0 win at Anfield. That remains Slot’s only league defeat in charge of the Merseysiders and when it happened four months ago it was seen as a big shock. But now Forest are flying high in the league and it looks less like an upset with every week that passes.

That’s why Slot is sure that the East Midlands club can challenge for the title.
