The last remaining vessel from a fleet delivering aid to Gaza headed towards the conflict-ridden Palestinian region on Friday, following global outcry over Israeli navy actions against the other ships. The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising numerous vessels, embarked last month, carrying politicians and activists like Swedish advocate Greta Thunberg to Gaza, where the UN has reported a worsening famine situation. Israeli naval forces initiated interceptions on Wednesday, with an Israeli official revealing the prevention of boats carrying more than 400 individuals from reaching Gaza the next day. The flotilla reported on Friday that 42 ships had been unlawfully intercepted and their passengers taken into custody. With only one ship, the Marinette, continuing its journey to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza, as indicated by the flotilla’s tracking system. The flotilla expressed on Instagram, “The world witnessed the consequences when civilians confront a blockade. Yet, the Marinette persists in its course.” Demonstrations worldwide on Thursday decried Israel’s actions and called for increased sanctions. In Barcelona, where the flotilla originated, approximately 15,000 people marched, voicing slogans such as “Gaza, you are not alone,” “Boycott Israel,” and “Freedom for Palestine.” In Dublin, outside the Irish parliament, hundreds gathered, including Miriam McNally, expressing deep concern for her daughter aboard the flotilla. Protests also occurred in Paris, Berlin, The Hague, Tunis, Brasilia, and Buenos Aires, according to reports from AFP correspondents.
