World leaders and human rights organizations across the globe have criticized Israel’s actions in intercepting the Global Sumud Flotilla, while the ongoing assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 77 more Palestinians. Israeli armed forces boarded approximately 45 ships trying to break a naval blockade to deliver aid to Gaza, detaining over 400 foreign activists, including Greta Thunberg. The majority of the flotilla’s vessels have now been seized.
Protests in support of the Gaza flotilla and the Palestinian cause have erupted in various countries, including Spain, Italy, Argentina, Malaysia, and Colombia. Israel has announced plans to deport the detained pro-Palestinian activists, asserting that none of the vessels violated its maritime blockade.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of around 45 vessels, embarked on its journey to Gaza last month amid reports of famine in the region according to the United Nations. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani anticipates the flotilla members’ expulsion from Israel and their transportation to European capitals via charter flights.
Israel has assured that all passengers are safe and healthy as they were brought ashore in Ashdod. A last vessel named Marinette from the flotilla is still at sea, with Israel warning that any attempt to breach the blockade will be thwarted.
The Committee to Protect Journalists and Amnesty International have condemned Israel’s actions, with the latter labeling it as an act of intimidation to silence critics of Israel’s policies in Gaza. The flotilla, carrying activists from various countries, set sail from European ports and made a stop in Tunisia before resuming its journey.
In response to the interception, protests condemning Israel’s actions have swept across Europe and beyond, with rallies in Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Geneva, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Karachi. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced the expulsion of all Israeli diplomats in the country over the incident.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with fears of a large-scale massacre as Israeli forces continue their offensive. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has decried Israel’s threats to define remaining Palestinians in Gaza City as terrorists or terror supporters. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, warned of potential mass killings if civilians are not allowed to leave the area.
Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling have resulted in the deaths of at least 77 individuals in Gaza City. Efforts to end the conflict are ongoing, with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey working to persuade Hamas to accept a ceasefire plan put forth by US President Donald Trump. The White House has outlined a 20-point proposal for immediate ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, disarmament, and the establishment of a transitional government, giving Hamas a limited timeframe to agree to the terms.
