General students formed a human chain demanding the resuming of normal activities on campus on Tuesday
History department students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University continued their protests on campus for the thirteenth consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding approval from the University Grants Commission for the department.
As a result, classes and all normal activities on the campus continued being suspended.
Md. Nuruddin Ahmed, registrar of the university, said : “The UGC has formed a seven member committee to resolve all issues pertaining to the university, including that of the history department. The committee will propose a solution to the problems after closer scrutiny and introspection.”
Md. Shariful Islam Shohag, a student of the department, said to this correspondent : “We will continue the protest until our demand is met.”
Meanwhile, general students formed a human chain demanding the resuming of normal activities on campus on Tuesday.
Social media was also rife with mixed opinions from students on Tuesday.
Shuvo Kumar, a student of the Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department, said : “We have no problems with the history department students protesting. But we demand that they allow us,the ordinary students, to continue their classes normally.”
Students of the history department of the university started their demonstration after the UGC in a meeting on February 6 decided to refuse approval to the department.
Protesters decided to express their indignation over the matter by deciding to lock the gates of the university’s administrative and academic buildings.
Later, several departments of the university and the history departments of some other universities, including those of Dhaka University, Chittagong University and Jagannath University, expressed solidarity with the movement.
